A Guide on Dental Veneers

A Guide on Dental Veneers

Veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made shells made from tooth-colored material designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. They are bonded to the front of the teeth, changing their color, shape, size, or length.

This treatment is used to fix gaps between teeth and is also a solution for stained, chipped, misaligned, and uneven teeth. They are also used to change the shape of teeth that are too small or large.

The Types of Veneers

  • Traditional porcelain veneers are made of a very thin layer of ceramic material that is bonded to your teeth. They are commonly used for correcting tooth discoloration, hiding minor misalignments, and covering cracked or worn-down teeth. Customized porcelain veneers are stain resistant and look very natural.
  • Composite resin veneers are not as strong as traditional porcelain veneers. They can be made to match the color of your teeth but cannot be customized during application. They are less expensive and not as durable as other types of veneers. This type of veneer is used to enhance the appearance of a tooth rather than to repair it.

Are Veneers for Me?

If you have a few teeth that you’d like to make teeth look whiter or brighter, then you may be a good candidate for dental veneers. This is typically only the case for those that have otherwise healthy teeth and gums without any decay or gum disease. The condition of your teeth and gums will affect how long your veneers last and what types of food you can eat.

Veneers are thin sheets of porcelain that are bonded to the front of your teeth using a chemical bonding agent and a special light. Once they are bonded to your teeth, they act as covers for the fronts of your teeth to improve their appearance. They are often used to address the appearance of chipped, cracked, worn, stained, or even slightly misaligned teeth. However, there are alternative options, including dental crowns and teeth whitening treatments, that can help you improve the appearance of your smile, as well.

Placing the Veneer

Once the tooth has been reshaped, the dentist will temporarily cement the veneer in place using a resin adhesive. When the patient arrives at the office, he or she will first have a consultation with the dentist to discuss the desired results. Then, a model of the mouth will be made and sent to the lab for fabrication of the veneers. Using the model, a technician at the lab will fabricate the custom porcelain laminates, and the dentist will then place them on the teeth in the desired position.

The dentist may remove a small amount of enamel to make room for the veneers or bond them directly to the existing teeth using a special type of cement. Once they are applied to the teeth, they will immediately change the appearance of your smile. The dentist will likely schedule a follow-up appointment to check them once more to ensure they are comfortable and secure. In some cases, a patient may be asked to wear temporary veneers until more permanent ones can be made.
